The sexiest wine on the planet

wachau

Above: the wines of Nikolaihof are not “old fashioned” or “traditional.” They are “permanent,” as legendary importer Terry Theise likes to say. It’s not that they’ve resisted change or have lagged behind the times. It’s that the estate makes mind-blowing expressions of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling and no one — no one on either side of the Atlantic Ocean — wants that to change. The same old ladies, in their traditional Bavarian dress, still pick the grapes. Any winemaker will tell you that women are much better at picking grapes than men because they take more care and are more gentle with the fruit. Is that SEXY or what?

cristine_saahsThe woman pictured to the left, Cristine Saahs, turns us on. Yes, she makes us horny. Not in a physical way, mind you. But in a spiritually vinous (Venus) way. She makes what we — and many like us — consider to be one of the sexiest wines in the world. And her Nikolaihof 2008 Hefeabzug Grüner Veltliner (Wachau) will be featured at the San Diego Natural Wine Summit on Sunday August 9 (click for details). And her wine is sexy not just because it will blow your mind when you put it in your mouth, but also because her estate was the first biodynamic estate in Europe. In 1971 Nikolaihof became the first European winery (not Joly in France, btw) to complete the 100% purification of its subsoils. You have to keep in mind that there is a big difference between “organic” farming and “biodynamic” farming. Organic farming employs sustainable practices and avoids pesticides and chemicals but biodynamic farming taste it a step further: to obtain Demeter biodynamic certification, all chemical footprints must be removed from the soil — including runoff from other farms and residual traces of the industrial age.

Here’s what our wine diva Alice Feiring had to say about her recent trip to Nikolaihof: “If you are in the Wachau, a visit here is demanded of you. You cannot pass go. You cannot. And what’s more, if you don’t book a table at their restaurant, you’re out of your mind.” Btw, Alice calls their Grüner “the sexiest wine on the planet.”

And here are her tasting notes for the Nikolaihof 2008 Hefeabzug Grüner Veltliner which we will be tasting on Sunday August 9 at the event: “’08 NIKOLAIHOF HEFEABZUG–very fresh. apple. complex finish. vibrant. straight to the gut with no interference. silver and floral.”

If you are not aroused by now, PLEASE COME SEE US IMMEDIATELY! You’ll have to wait until a week from Sunday for the Nikolaihof but we’ve got some natural beauties to tide you over in the meantime.
