Now Playing At Jaynes: Major Lance

Dig 60’s Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions?  Well check out protege Major Lance from Curtis’ Curtom label.  This clip is  live with no lip sync. The band is somewhere back in the shadows with a particularly mean sounding bari sax player prominent in the mix.   Can’t explain the beret’d terrier.  This song, “Monkey Time” became a northern soul dance favorite during the mod revival of the 80’s.  San Diego was one of the core hubs of this revival with bands like the Crawdaddys, The Event and the Tell Tale Hearts.

  1. I got a kick out of this post … If you have a soft spot for the Tell-Tale Hearts, the Crawdaddys and the rest of the San Diego garage underground of the early 1980s, come join us over at CheUnderground.com!

Most of the musicians and top scenesters are over there now — a little bit older, considerably wiser and having a lovely time. 🙂

  2. Wow! This has been one of my favourite soul tracks since I was a kid. I was nuts about the O’keh stuff Curtis wrote for Major Lance. Um um um um um um is another. Never seen footage of him before so thanks for posting!
