Happy Holidays everyone! We are looking forward to a great holiday season at Jaynes. The pub is beautifully decorated and ready for a month of revelry!

As you may know we take the first 2 weeks of January off as a staff holiday. Many miles are traveled and many great meals are consumed around the globe. Its our annual mojo hunt and we come backed refreshed and very inspired for another great year.

Of course we make sure to go out with a bang in December. Some highlights include a New Year’s Eve feast and a Christmas Eve Event to be announced shortly. Of course if you are looking for a great gift for friends and family we have gift cards available. You can purchase them in person or over the phone.

For years Jaynes the month of December has become synonymous with a little beer you may have heard from the Emerald Isle, Guinness. Each year starting December 1st until 2012 we pour 20oz imperial pints of Guinness draft for just $3, all the time. That’s right, all the time. This is just a small gesture of thanks to all of our guests for another wonderful year at Jaynes.

Beaujolais Nouveau 2011 with My Main Man of Morgon, Jean Foillard

Like clockwork every year on the third Thursday of November there is a French wine released called Beaujolais Nouveau. Beaujolais Nouveau is a young, short ferment and thus low alcohol wine made from the primary grape of Beaujolais, gamay. The marking of this day began as a local tradition in Lyon France back in 1951 as a celebration of the year’s harvest in which much wine was consumed and sold inexpensively around the local area. This quickly spread north to the wine bars of Paris and across France.

Soon enough an enterprising producer named George Deboeuf capitalized on this event and turned it into a worldwide phenomenon by exporting the wine. It became the wine world’s Cinco De Maya. Unfortunately the quality of his wine and others quickly deteriorated as the craze for anything from Beaujolais skyrocketed.

Well why are you talking about a wine that may or may not be total crap? Well fellow wine geeks be damned, I love the original spirit behind this celebration and thankfully some of these wines are actually really great. We just happen to have the best of the best by my main man of Morgon, Jean Foillard. Jean Foillard is among a small vanguard of natural wine producers in Beaujolais making some of the most beautiful wines in the world right now. I literally just opened a bottle and am drinking a glass right now and loving it. Its so cool to have this early window into the wines of one of my favorite producers.

We will be pouring the 2011 Jean Foillard Beaujolais Nouveau tonight Thursday through the weekend. We hope you will come join us!

Sarah’s upcoming Cocktail Competition Calendar

It’s that time of year again….competition season! This Sunday I will be participating in Speed-Rack LA, the search for the fastest (and most accurate) female bartender in Southern California. I’ll be representing Jayne’s Gastropub and speedily crafting cocktails to raise money for breast cancer research. Should you be in the Los Angeles area, tickets are $25 and the event will be held in the Roosevelt Hotel from 3pm-7pm. If you would like to help me out with a little practice this week, I’ll have a printed list of all 50 classic cocktails I’ll be tested on behind the bar. Feel free to bring a stopwatch! Also, Tuesday November 29th marks the second annual El Dorado Cocktail Competition, benefiting the MCASD. Bartenders from Prohibition, Noble Experiment, El Dorado, Searsucker, amongst others (and yours truly!) will go head to head in front of a panel of judges. If this event is anything like last year’s, it’s not to be missed! Come cheer me on, have some drinks, and enter the raffles to win prizes and benefit one of my favorite local art museums.

Have a drink and plant a tree! Jaynes has partnered with Tru Organic Spirits and The Greenbar Collective. For every drink made with Tru, organic spirits distributor The Greenbar Collective will fight deforestation by planting a tree in the central American rainforest. Jaynes’ star bartender Sarah Ellis will be hand crafting the cocktails for the evening and will be joined by guest mixologist Adam Stemmler. Cocktails are all $5. The ever popular Baby Jayne Burger and Fries will also be served for $5. We will be closed for regular service and will be seating throughout the entire restaurant. 6-9pm.

The Jaynes Pastrami Reuben is on the menu! Growing up, Jon often took the metro north train from Westport, CT in to the city and headed straight for one of two places. Uptown for Carnegie Deli or downtown to Katz’s Deli for a Pastrami Reuben on Rye.

In our estimation there is little more comforting than Hot Pastrami, Sauerkraut, melted Swiss Cheese and Thousand Island Dressing on Rye bread. At Jaynes we get the classic preparation just right, with Niman Ranch Pastrami, Bread and Cie Corn Rye, house made zucchini pickles and our hand-cut kennebec french fries. We will be serving this little taste of East Coast heaven Tuesday-Thursday this week for just $14.50

Natural Wine Tasting Series:Hungary This Saturday October the 8th. 4-6pm

We are happy to announce a very exciting event for this month’s Natural Wine Tasting Series this Saturday: Hungary! We will be joined by good friends Stetson Robbins and Matt Ahern from Blue Danube Wines, who are experts on this part of the world. Blue Danube and Jaynes are kindred spirits in promoting lesser known regions and indigenous varieties and this is another first ever in San Diego tasting that we’re proud to be hosting. Be the first on your block to drink and pronounce Kékfrankos and Sparkling Tokaji! We will also be serving traditional Hungarian bites like Körözöt.

In Stetson’s words: The food and wine culture of Hungary is one of Europe’s oldest and most dynamic. The basin of the ancient Pannonian sea, Hungary is a veritable bread basket of vast fields of grain, fruitful orchards and game filled forest. Sporadic outcroppings of long dormant volcanoes and limestone massifs blanketed with indigenous vines, jut from these long plains. Here where the vine grows, people make the full flavored spicy foods and wines that separate the Hungarian palate from the rest of Europe’s. This is just a taste of this unsung destination for gourmands, but one you will not quickly forget. I hope that you will be drawn to Hungary as we at Blue Danube Wine Co were. Cheers!
